Divergent - Veronica Roth - Book Review!

Divergent - A futuristic post-war setting, a strong heroine, a romance, and a struggle against the oppression inherent in the status quo.
Hello, my friends! Thanks for coming! Today I am going to talk about a book called Divergent!
Divergent (Divergent Series) |
The story takes place in an undermined future where the world is divided into factions, including Candor, Abnegation, Dauntless, Erudite, and Amity. The setting is the near future in a Chicago that has been largely depopulated as a result of some kind of global catastrophe. The war has left the skyline largely intact but the tallest building shows massive damage. A huge wall has been erected around the city, ostensibly to keep out whatever may live over the horizon but perhaps also to keep the population in. Beatrice (Tris), our main character, has reached the age of sixteen where she is tested and placed in a faction that complements her intuition and character. Just like Harry Potter, but anyway. As the story progresses and she chooses her path, it’s suddenly clear that she doesn’t quite fit in just one faction and that proves threatening for those controlling this perfect society because as a Divergent, she can’t easily be manipulated. What comes next is a continuous reveal of hidden agendas and power plays. The importance of the war is that it decimated the human population and caused a restructuring of society.
Divergent Series Box Set (Books 1-4) |
For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can't have both. There are many things that make this a great book. The story, the characters the writing. It wasn't just one thing that stood out to me, this was a perfect mesh of all the things that make a book unforgettable. The pacing and the plot never really give up, making this book difficult to put down. The choice you make is not just defining, but evaluated by others. When I talk about connecting with characters, this is the type of book I'm talking about. I cared about what happened to them.
I have to say, I had an absolute blast reading this adventure, and I enjoyed every minute of it. The characters, setting, plot, and narrative were perfectly blended to produce a highly action-packed novel.
