Red Dead Redemption and RDR 2 - A Detailed Review!

Red Dead Redemption - set during the decline of the American frontier in the year 1911. John Marston, a former outlaw whose wife and son are taken hostage by the government in ransom for his services as a hired gun.

Hello, my friends! Thanks for coming! Today I am going to talk about Red Dead Redemption!

The script is relatively simple, involving elements like revenge and, of course, many conflicts. From some points of view, the story may even be considered weak. But anyone who knows Western movies knows that Red Dead brings a coherent narrative to the standards of the genre in theaters. What makes it even more spectacular is the way it unfolds. So let's get down to the details.

The story takes place in the year 1911. The Main Character is  John Marston. He was a member of a gang that haunted the American West with its atrocities. Marston decides to reassess her attitudes and simply decides to leave his past behind and start a new life with his family. However, Marston was not the only one to change. The whole country was in constant transformation, and the primary purpose of the federal government was to spread its laws all over the place. To try to achieve their goals, some government officials decide to kidnap Marston's son and wife. Threatening to kill them if the former thug did not cooperate. Accepting the "invitation," Marston has to travel the four corners of the West to capture three former comrades from their bank robbery days. So he returns to the world of violence and savagery, having now only one goal: to save his family and continue his life in a place far from all this chaos. It is evident that for this, Marston has to go through several dangerous situations, leading him to take up arms and hunt down the men who were once his friends.

On the Mexican side, there is a revolution against a military dictatorship. A sure rebel called Abraham Reyes leads a revolt against the tyranny in the country. This was inspired by the Mexican Revolution, which ran from 1910 to 1920 and left a high death rate across the country. RDR is inspired by some famous films, such as "Stagecoach" (1939), to defend the carriages of bandits mounted on horseback; "The Unforgiven" (1992), for the atmospheric and dramatic climate. And "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly," starring Clint Eastwood and directed by Sergio Leone. Anyone who has seen one of these movies of this style will probably notice that Red Dead Redemption can bring all this spirit into the story. In particular, Marston has a personality that reminiscent of the characters of Clint Eastwood in theaters: a quiet and calm, lethal and few words.

It is possible to notice throughout the plot some factors that already foresaw the "end" of the Old-West. You can find phones, a car, and a more modern city with equally smooth asphalt and architecture (Blackwater). In the intro scene, you may notice some people talking something like, "this wild place is becoming civilized." The old-west world gave its last sighs in 1920. In a world infested by outlaws, Marston has to use his acumen to find reliable people, and this will not be easy. In addition to Bonnie, who saves Marston early on, the protagonist will rarely find anyone who shows no signs of betrayal. What's more, finding help is almost impossible, since many of the "buddies" just pass the problem on. All this ends up generating a long and full of surprises, fueled by events and compelling elements.

As we mentioned earlier, Red Dead's art direction is phenomenal. Fortunately, the elements designed by Rockstar's creative minds are designed with quality on the screen. Red Dead Redemption is not the most beautiful game of all time, at least technically. But the western portrait is more than spectacular, forcing the player to spend at least a few hours just wandering around and watching the beauty and the absurd wealth in detail. You really feel you are in a world and a world with life.

About Red Dead Redemption 2

Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of the most anticipated (and bestselling) games in history. And by now you have probably read countless reviews and, if you haven't bought it yet, have decided whether or not to buy the game. So let's take a closer look at the hype and try to bring our voice to the game stack of the moment. RDR 2 is fantastic, there's no denying it. Even those who don't like the genre of the open-world or western games will recognize the impressive technical work behind this game. We have a huge map, with beautiful scenery, both in the aspect of art direction and graphic quality, full of activities of the most varied, all interconnected by an excellent narrative, rich in detail and depth. I often say that telling a story is as important as the story itself. Red Dead Redemption 2 hits it right off the bat, placing the player in the snow-capped mountains where Dutch van der Linde's gang hides after an unsuccessful robbery. You incorporate Arthur Morgan, the pack leader's right arm, and "handyman" in general. This trapped situation of the snowbound group was a deliberate and intelligent choice by Rockstar. Starting the game like this, the developer has a job in line with the game's plot to "plaster" the gameplay while teaching the player basic mechanics.

Of course, starting a game that so many people have been looking forward to playing so slowly will frustrate many players. But this frustration was probably into consideration by the developer team and, in a way, even relied on it. I say this because when the gang finally leaves the mountains and sets up a new camp. The game gives you complete freedom to explore the maps and participate in the activities you come across. Giving them a tremendous sense of relief and freedom, which is precisely what they are. People must be feeling after getting out of the snow. This alignment of the player's feeling with that of the characters is deliberate and somewhat impressive to be achieved anytime soon in a game. Breathing new airs we already have several new activities available and, by performing some more history missions, many others are released. In addition to the various mini-games, bounty hunts, debt collection, and tasks in general, the resource gathering aspect is significantly enhanced compared to the first game. You can pick fruits, plants and flowers, hunt animals and fish, but the player does not do all this just to eat and sell some items. Now you need to take care of three aspects of Arthur Morgan's life: the health of the character, his horse, and the gang camp. Maintaining Morgan and horse health is done in much the same way. There are a life bar and the "core" of life, so does stamina. When you get injured or spend strength, it is the bar around you that decreases. But over time, the "core" bars are also emptied, impacting the speed you recover and the maximum they fill as well. It is necessary to eat and drink, and the same goes for the horse. So you need to hunt from time to time, gather resources, always secure some food in the bag for when needed.

Van der Linde's camp is a central part of the game. It works as your "base," and you contribute to it by offering money and items that increase the resources it can provide you with back. Upgrading the medicine wagon, for example, will bring you more medical issues that you can pick up at any time to take on your adventures. In the camp, you also find a tent where you can sleep, change clothes, shave, etc. Of course, the most critical aspect of the game is the shootings. It's exciting what RDR 2 did in the shooter gameplay part. Because it's not as easy to shoot in this game as in others, you feel the limitations of the weapons of the time. With an extremely slow cadence and a high difficulty aiming, which is much worse when we're on the go. And this is not only more immersive and realistic, but it also makes the game more challenging. And without compromising the experience, yet it is quite fun and rewarding to participate in the shootings, perhaps even more for the expanded challenge. I just recommend adjusting the auto-aim options here to suit your way. The game's story is not very innovative and sometimes even predictable. But the important thing is the way it is told.

The game takes advantage of its immensity and the vast amount of hours of gameplay it offers to deepen your characters. With different interactions in the camp that sometimes advance the campaign or often just contribute to the ambiance. All this gives life to the supporters and the gang, which is told at a high pace. And of course, besides the main story, we have several parallels, the encounters with the "strangers." They happen naturally and are entirely optional, but are very well implemented. The game strives to ensure that their extra missions are not just "come and shoot." Trying to give them more context and story, increasing their desire to accomplish these missions and to meet all sorts of tragic, entertaining, or threatening characters. For this immersion in the fight is necessary a quality voice acting, something that the game also offers. Suffice it to say that one of the missions that I enjoyed doing most in the game was just getting on a boat fishing and watching the characters talk.

If you have been following the trailers and videos, you already know that Red Dead Redemption 2 has impressive graphics. Rockstar continues to excel at what it can pull from consoles, and even playing the base version of video games, the game shines in its richness of detail, texture, and scenery. In addition to running very stable, especially taking into account all that it deserves. The animations are simply amazing, being among the best I've ever seen in a game. Facial expressions, so crucial for deepening the story and identifying with the characters, are excellent in all their details. Even the weather conditions of RDR 2 are noteworthy because they draw a lot of attention. You can imagine precisely what Morgan and his little horse are facing right now. And it all just scratches the surface of the massive amount of content in this game. From the vast story to the optional missions with strangers and all sorts of parallel activities. I can't even imagine how many hours someone really falls in love with this game can devote to it. RDR 2 is sure to be considered the best game of the generation by many of its fans. But the sheer amount of content, no matter how good, is not the part I like most about the game. What Red Dead Redemption 2 does best is building its world with a different technical level that shows an almost endless amount of character interaction in different contexts. Giving them life and depth, which really It makes the experience unique and one of the most immersive I've ever had. The game world looks real, and it's a beautiful world, with stunning animations and a beautifully told story. RDR 2 does not bring any significant innovation or something utterly unheard of.

One more thing that needs to be taken into consideration is that I didn't leave the shootings section last when I talked about gameplay for nothing. If you consider all the activity in the game, the least you can do in RDR 2 is shoot. Much of the game is dedicated, above all, to scrolling. Riding a horse following NPCs to learn more about the story, or heading towards the goal of looking for items, resources or to get your horseback. Anyone who comes into the game thinking they will have an uninterrupted action experience like some shooters will find themselves disappointed. Red Dead Redemption 2 is an excellent game that will match the hype of many people. And that is saying a lot because there is hype for this game!

One compliment I can't help but give the game is that it is a "justified prequel." RDR 2 is the perfect example of what a prequel should be. The game is not set before the first just to have an excuse to exist, it deepens the history, lore and the setting of the universe, elevating the first game. Plunging into van der Linde's gang past adds to the tragedy and impact of the previous game's plot. Playing RDR 2 makes you want to play RDR 1. RDR 2 is a vast and unforgettable experience But don't be fooled by the immense popularity of the game and first make sure that this style appeals to you. Those who enjoy the genre and decide to try it for sure will have an unforgettable experience in a unique title. Experience of hundreds of hours inclusive.
