They train for several years with a sensei, training both body and mind, and return to attempt human alchemy, knowing full well that it is forbidden. The attempt goes wrong, and at the end, Edward has lost his right arm and left leg, and Al's soul has been attached to a suit of armor. They bury their creation, burn their house down, and leave town. They are pursuing the Philosopher's Stone so that they can transgress the rule of Equivalent Exchange and recoup their bodies.
